Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve boundary, ESZ and notifications

The tiger reserve, its core and buffer, the Eco-Sensitive Zone and a proposed expansion are different legal or planning layers. This page separates them by instrument, date, area and status.

Reading Rule

A planning map does not change a legal boundary

A notification issued under the Wild Life (Protection) Act establishes or amends the tiger-reserve area. An ESZ notification regulates a separate surrounding zone. A KML file is a spatial aid, while a plan or an in-principle approval records intended action. These records must not be treated as interchangeable.

Area Comparison

Why official pages can show different MHTR figures

The difference is principally a question of source date and legal layer. Older national profiles describe the 2013 reserve; the current Rajasthan register incorporates the 2023 amendment.

Record Core Buffer Total / extent How it should be used
2013 tiger-reserve notification 417.17188 sq km 342.82274 sq km 759.99462 sq km, commonly rounded to 759.99 Base instrument
Historical baseline, amended in 2023.
2023 amending notification 690.71178 sq km 445.07522 sq km 1,135.787 sq km Notified
Current state-government legal area.
2020 Eco-Sensitive Zone Separate from the core-buffer calculation 248.70 sq km; extends 0 to 1 km around the then-notified reserve boundary Notified ESZ
Use for ESZ regulation and planning, not as the tiger-reserve area.
Rajasthan Long Term Action Plan 201.40 sq km proposed addition 990.13 sq km proposed addition 1,191.53 sq km proposed expansion Proposal
In-principle technical approval is not a boundary notification.

The proposed LTAP additions must not be added to the 2023 notified total. The LTAP states that notification depends on local-community consent and State administrative approval, and that implementation requires the prescribed statutory permissions.

ESZ Zonal Master Plan published

The plan organises the ESZ regulatory framework, land-use context and development controls. It implements the ESZ planning requirement; it does not replace the tiger-reserve notification.

Department ESZ KML updated

The Forest Department download register lists the MHTR reserve KML as dated 31 July 2018 and a separate ESZ KML as updated on 1 June 2026. The two files therefore have different subjects and update dates.

Eco-Sensitive Zone

The ESZ is a variable-width regulatory zone

The final Gazette describes an ESZ extending from zero to one kilometre around the reserve and covering 248.70 sq km. Zero extent occurs in directions where the notification records co-termination with the tiger-reserve buffer. The Gazette also provides boundary descriptions, coordinates, maps and a village list.

The ESZ does not prohibit every activity. The notification and Zonal Master Plan distinguish prohibited, regulated and promoted activities. Site-specific permissions remain the responsibility of the competent government authorities.

GIS Interpretation

How the 2026 ESZ KML should be used

Appropriate use

  • Show a dated ESZ outer-limit or context overlay.
  • Retain the source label “Rajasthan Forest Department, ESZ KML as on 01.06.2026”.
  • Read the geometry with the 2020 Gazette and 2023 Zonal Master Plan.
  • Use the notification schedules and revenue records for legal interpretation.

Incorrect use

  • Do not replace the reserve or Critical Tiger Habitat polygon with the ESZ KML.
  • Do not colour the complete enclosed footprint as 248.70 sq km of ESZ.
  • Do not describe a KML calculation as a notified legal area.
  • Do not infer the meaning of unlabelled internal geometry without an official legend.
